Worst Man-Made Environmental Disasters

Newsweek has published a slideshow of 11 of the worst environmental disasters wrought by humans. Many of these are so famous that simply saying the names of the locations tells their stories: Chernobyl, Bhopal, Love Canal.

The other 8 worst man-made environmental disasters:
  • Eroding coastlines and melting ice caps
  • Coal spills at power plants
  • Rainforest destruction
  • Industrial mining
  • Overfishing
  • Oil spills
  • Ocean pollution and a trash-filled gyre larger than Texas
  • Diverting waterways (with an arresting image of camels near a ship sitting on grassy land that used to be the bed of the Aral Sea).
