After reading Tom Friedman's post in the New York Times yesterday, about the National Ignition Facility and its goal of harnessing fusion energy, I sauntered over to the NIF website.
Pretty remarkable, what's going on there. It's the fruition of an almost 50-year-old goal. According to this page, scientists have been dreaming of using multiple lasers to ignite a fusion micro-explosion ever since the laser was invented in 1960.
Browsing around the NIF site will give you a pretty thorough grounding in the basics of nuclear fusion energy. Who better to learn it from, than the folks who are making it happen?
